MAN GIVEN SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR BENEFIT FRAUD

A man was given a suspended prison sentence for benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates' Court today.

Michael McKernan (38), of Ballaghbeg, Glen Road, had claimed income support totalling £3,039 to which he was not entitled as he was working. The offence occurred between November 2003 and June 2004.

He was given a two-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay £28 costs. He is also required to pay back the money he falsely claimed to the Social Security Agency.

This is the 146th successful prosecution of benefit fraud so far this year.
