MAN GIVEN SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR BENEFIT FRAUD
A man was given a suspended prison sentence for benefit fraud at Belfast Magistrates' Court today.
Michael McKernan (38), of Ballaghbeg, Glen Road, had claimed income support totalling Ł3,039 to which he was not entitled as he was working. The offence occurred between November 2003 and June 2004.
He was given a two-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to pay Ł28 costs. He is also required to pay back the money he falsely claimed to the Social Security Agency.
This is the 146th successful prosecution of benefit fraud so far this year.
