FUNDING BOOST SECURES JOBS AT BALLYCLARE COMMUNITY CONCERNS

The Department for Social Development (DSD) has confirmed continuing funding for Ballyclare Community Concerns, ensuring the retention of three key community support posts until August 2007.

Following a visit to Ballyclare, Social Development Minister David Hanson MP, announced that funding of £85,000 has been allocated to Ballyclare Community Concerns to allow key services to continue. Three posts will be supported by the funding including those of Centre Manager, Admin Assistant and Caretaker.

The Minister said: "My Department recognises that tackling deprivation and building communities is not easy and that we can only succeed and bring about real change by working in partnership with political representatives, local residents, community groups and statutory agencies.

"This funding award recognises the vital role played by Ballyclare Community Concerns in providing support to the people of Ballyclare and will enable the group to widen their services to reach other sections of the community."

During his visit, the Minister officially opened the Ballyclare Community Concerns charity shop, and helped local residents bury a time capsule at the site of the new Resource Centre.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

1. Ballyclare Community Concerns was established in 1991 and provides and facilitates community based services to meet the economic and social needs of the people of Ballyclare and the surrounding hinterland. Services include a luncheon club for about 100 senior citizens per week, a charity shop, womens' groups, IT training, signposting to advice services, youth facilities and a credit union.

2. BCC are currently housed at temporary accommodation at Rashee Road, Ballyclare. The new Ballyclare Resource Centre is currently under construction at 28-32 Doagh Road, Ballyclare and is expected to be completed by the end of 2006.
