£9.5 MILLION REGENERATION SCHEME FOR WEST BELFAST

Four acres of derelict land at Westrock/Brittons Parade in West Belfast is to be transformed into a £9.5million private residential development.

It is hoped that over 70 new homes will be built on the site to help meet the needs of first time buyers and families.

Social Development Minister David Hanson MP said: "Vacant and derelict land can offer real opportunities for local regeneration helping to create attractive, safe and sustainable environments in the most deprived neighbourhoods.

"Following the successful marketing of this desolate and abused site by DSD's Belfast Regeneration Office (BRO), a number of proposals were received. This competition has enabled us to draw substantial private sector investment into the area and we have selected NMC Developments to develop this significant site.

"The proposals have the potential to bring much needed benefits to the Lower Falls/Clonard Neighbourhood Renewal Area by meeting the considerable demand for housing, making it a more attractive place to live, work and invest in and building new hope in the community."

BRO assessed the proposals with professional advisers including planners and valuers to select a preferred developer. The site will remain in the Department's ownership until the developer completes the work to the required standard.

Subject to planning permission and other statutory approvals it is hoped that work on the first phase of the development will begin in July of this year.
