OMAGH COURT CONVICTS MAN OF BENEFIT FRAUD

A man who claimed more than £2,000 in benefits despite having significant capital was convicted of fraud at Omagh Court on August 12.

Ronald Mulligan, formerly of Cairn Park, Gortin, now living in Glasgow, pleaded guilty to obtaining £2,320 in Income Support.

The court was told that Mr Mulligan had admitted the offence at the earliest opportunity and had travelled to court from his new address in Scotland at his own expense.

The magistrate acknowledged that this was his first offence and imposed a fine of £50 for each offence together with costs. Mr Mulligan will be required to repay the £2,320 overpayment.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

  • Income Support is not payable to people aged under 60 who have capital and savings of more than £8,000
  • This case is the latest in a series take by the Social Security Agency as part of its commitment to tackle benefit fraud.
