SPELLAR WELCOMES £1.5M MAKEOVER OF BANBRIDGE

A £1.5m environmental improvement scheme that has helped to transform the appearance of Banbridge was officially opened today by Minister for Social Development, John Spellar MP.

The investment included the realignment and repaving of footpaths and parking lay-bys, improvements to the central reservation area, planting of trees and provision of new street furniture in Newry Street, Bridge Street and Church Square.

Speaking at an event to mark the scheme’s completion, the Minister said: "This initiative has dramatically improved the visual appearance of Banbridge and marks a significant step in implementing the town’s regeneration strategy.

"It has given Banbridge a major boost, creating a vibrant environment that is encouraging further investment and helping to promote the town as a major shopping destination.

"This one of the largest environmental improvement schemes to be completed in Northern Ireland. It has been achieved by a dynamic partnership between the Department for Social Development, Roads Service, Banbridge District Council, the Banbridge Community Regeneration Company and, of course, with the co-operation of traders and local people. I am confident that it marks the beginning of a period of prosperity for the town."

The Department for Social Development has recently opened an office located in the Banbridge Business Centre at Scarva Rd. It will deal with Town and City Centre Re-invigoration and Neighbourhood Renewal for the area stretching from Dromore to Newry and from Craigavon to Newcastle.
