EILEEN EVASON APPOINTED AS STANDARDS COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON
Professor Eileen Evason has been appointed as chairperson of the Standards Committee for the Social Security and Northern Ireland Child Support Agencies.
Professor Evason will replace Mr Les Allamby, the current chairperson who is not seeking re-appointment and will stand down on completion of the 2003/04 Decision Making and Payment Accuracy annual report, probably in June 2004.
NOTES TO EDITORS:
- The Northern Ireland Joint Standards Committee was set up in 1999 to report to the Chief Executives of the Social Security and Child Support Agencies in Northern Ireland on the standards of Decision Making and Payment Accuracy within the two Agencies.
- At that time, an independent chairman, Mr Les Allamby, Director of the Law Centre Northern Ireland, was appointed to enhance the committee’s perceived independence and provide Ministers and the two Chief Executives with improved assurance on the findings of their respective monitoring teams.
- The method of appointment of Professor Evason was in line with Public Appointment guidelines and was by public advertisement and interview of appropriate candidates.
- Professor Evason was until her recent retirement, employed as a lecturer in Social Policy at the University of Ulster. She has completed numerous projects relating to the business of both agencies. She has an extensive knowledge of both social security and child support matters and regularly appears on local television and radio to discuss these issues.
