CITY HALL CONFERENCE WILL MARK EUROPEAN YEAR OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

A major ‘barrier breaking’ conference to mark the European Year of People with Disabilities will be held in Belfast’s City Hall on November 26 and 27.

The unique two-day event, entitled Breaking the Barriers, was announced today by Monica Wilson, Chief Executive of Disability Action, who are organising the conference with the support of the Office of the First and Deputy First Minister, the Department for Social Development and other Northern Ireland Government Departments.

International expert speakers including David Ruebain, Christy Lynch, Anne Frye and others will give thought-provoking presentations on subjects covering attitudes and perceptions, health welfare and citizenship, education and transport.

This conference, supported by the Progressive Building Society, will explore international best practice and examine how this might be applied to Northern Ireland.

Monica Wilson, Chief Executive of Disability Action, said today:

"I am delighted to see such a groundbreaking conference with high profile speakers giving an international perspective on disability issues in the European Year of People with Disabilities.

"This conference will provide the opportunity to benchmark policy and innovative services for people with disabilities in Northern Ireland. I would encourage all of those organisations with any involvement in disability issues to come along and participate."
