Tesco Store Boost For Lurgan Town Centre

TESCO STORE BOOST FOR LURGAN TOWN CENTRE
Mr John Spellar MP, Minister with responsibility for Social Development, today announced the nomination of Tesco as the preferred developer for a re-development site in the centre of Lurgan.

The site was acquired by the Department as part of the Lurgan Town Centre Development Scheme and is adjacent to the new Ł2m distributor road, which was officially opened last December. Tesco is planning to build a major new foodstore with associated car parking.

The Minister said: "The new Tesco store represents a major boost for Lurgan. Along with the new road it will make an important contribution to the regeneration of the Town Centre. It will also represent a significant addition to the town’s current shopping facilities."

The Department’s choice of Tesco to develop the site follows on from a competitive development brief tendering and assessment process, which attracted proposals from four potential developers.

Depending on planning approval, the new store could be operational in 2005.
