BROWNE HOSTS LLOYDS TSB FOUNDATION CELEBRATION EVENT

The generous support given to voluntary and community groups in Northern Ireland by independent funders deserves full recognition, Des Browne MP, the Minister with responsibility for Social Development, said today.

The Minister was speaking at a reception at Hillsborough Castle when he presented awards to voluntary and community organisations on behalf of the Lloyds TSB Foundation for Northern Ireland. He said:

"I would like to recognise the generosity of the Lloyds TSB Foundation. Last year the Foundation awarded £2 million in grants to a wide range of voluntary and community organisations in Northern Ireland. Since 1987 their contribution has amounted to more than £10 million, an example of how Independent Funders provide tangible assistance to the voluntary and community sector. Indeed, giving by charitable trusts in Northern Ireland accounted for more than £77 million of total income to the voluntary and community sector in 2000/2001.

"I could also not let this opportunity pass without acknowledging the tireless work of the voluntary and community sector and their commitment and dedication on behalf of many disadvantaged people within their communities."

NOTES TO EDITORS

The four TSB Foundations were established at the flotation of TSB Group in Northern Ireland, England and Wales, Scotland and Channel Islands.

Since 1987 a total of £120 million has been donated throughout England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Channel Islands. The total donated within Northern Ireland exceeded £10 million by 2003.
