APPOINTMENTS TO THE BOARD OF THE NORTHERN IRELAND HOUSING EXECUTIVE

The Department for Social Development, today announced that the terms of appointment for the Chairman of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive, Mr Sid McDowell, the Vice-Chairman, Mr Jack Hood and member, Mrs Anne Henderson have been extended for a period of 18 months.

In addition, the Department appointed three members nominated by the Northern Ireland Housing Council, to serve from 5 November 2002 until 4 November 2003. They are:

Councillor Patsy McGlone,

Councillor Robert McKee

Councillor John Shiels

NOTES TO EDITORS:

The Board of the Northern Ireland Housing Executive consists of ten persons appointed by the Department for Social Development one of whom must be a woman and three must be nominated by the Northern Ireland Housing Council from its members.

The Board is responsible to the Minister for the efficient, effective and economic delivery of the Housing Executive's housing services. It determines the Housing Executive's policies, within its overall aims and objectives, and makes decisions on operational and organisational strategies. The Chairman reports to the Minister on the Executive’s achievement of its objectives and targets. A Chief Executive reports to the Board.

The Commissioner for Public Appointments, Dame Rennie Fritchie has agreed to the extensions and the time scale. It is anticipated that preparations for a fresh competition to fill the 3 extended posts will be started in the autumn of 2003.

SUMMARY OF APPOINTEES

Mr Mc Dowell, Mr Hood and Mrs Henderson have served in their present positions for the past seven years.

The Northern Ireland Housing Council nominees Cllrs McKee and McGlone have been re-nominated by the Housing Council for another year and Cllr Shiels has been nominated to replace Cllr Sam Gardiner.
