POSITIVE FUTURE FOR CRAIGAVON - DODDS
"The renewed confidence and the increased popularity of the central area of Craigavon can act as a platform to tackle the remaining housing problems in the Brownlow area," said Nigel Dodds, MP MLA, Minister for Social Development.
The Minister was speaking after meeting a deputation from Craigavon Borough Council and local residents in the Craigavon Civic Centre. Mr Dodds said: "The last 10 years has seen a dramatic transformation in the central area of Craigavon. The expansion of the shopping centre and the rapid growth in private housing has provided renewed confidence in the wider Craigavon area.
"The investment by the private sector is an indication of the future potential of the area. The commitment at a local level is already there through the leadership of Craigavon Borough Council, the strong community sector and the work of the Housing Executive. An inter agency approach is the way forward and I am determined to provide my Department’s support to help with the future regeneration of the Brownlow area."
The Minister did recognise that many of the problems in the Brownlow area are the result of anti social behaviour and criminal activity of a small minority of people. "I am determined that this small minority will not act as a barrier to the regeneration of Brownlow. New powers to tackle anti social behaviour are a key element of the new Housing Bill I will shortly introduce to the Assembly. It will strengthen the hand of ordinary decent tenants who want to live in peace. This bill together with the excellent co-operation which already exists between the Council, the police, the Housing Executive and the local community will provide renewed hope and confidence in the Brownlow," said Mr. Dodds.
