MINISTER CALLS FOR END TO VIOLENCE IN NORTH BELFAST

Speaking today after the murder of two men in north Belfast, Minister for Social Development, Maurice Morrow said:

"I am appalled by the paramilitary killings today on the Crumlin Road and the recent violence in North Belfast".

He went on to express his sympathy to the families of those affected, while condemning the actions of all those involved in fomenting the violence.

Mr Morrow, whose responsibilities include housing, also condemned the intimidation that has led to families leaving their homes. Emphasising the need to protect the most vulnerable in our society, the Minister said:

"I deplore the fact that elderly people and children have been uprooted, with significant damage to homes and property. The cost in financial terms is of course outweighed by the human price of this trauma. Nonetheless, scarce Housing Executive resources will have to be used to meet the needs identified."

Calling for an end to all violence in North Belfast, and support for the Police, Mr Morrow said:

"I think I echo the feelings of all right-thinking people, when I call for an immediate end to the violence and intimidation in North Belfast, and for full co-operation with the RUC."
