FAMILY CREDIT QUARTERLY STATISTICAL TABLES AUGUST 1999 INCORPORATING DISABILITY WORKING ALLOWANCE TABLES AUGUST 1999
The August 1999 quarterly tables for Family Credit are published today. The report also includes tables on Disability Working Allowance.
The main findings are:
- There were 29,790 Family Credit recipients in Northern Ireland at 31st August 1999. This represents a decrease of 0.9% in the total number of recipients over the previous 6 months.
- The number of two-parent families receiving the benefit decreased by 193 to 16,314 from the previous quarter. The number of lone parent recipients fell by 172 to 13,476 from the previous quarter, an increase of 6.6% since August 1998.
- In August 1999, 83% of family credit recipients were employees - the remaining 17% being self-employed. Over half (55%) of recipients were couples, and just under half (45%) were lone parents.
- The average amount of family credit in payment was £66.65, £3.73 higher than the average payment for recipients in Great Britain. On average, Northern
- Ireland family credit recipients earned £1.75 less (£118.34) and worked 1.7 hours longer (30.2 hours) per week than their counterparts in Great Britain.
- There were 1,157 recipients of disability working allowance in Northern Ireland receiving an average of £65.72 per week.
NOTES TO EDITORS:
- Family credit and Disability Working Allowance data are obtained from a 100% sample of awards made. Tables are compiled four months after the date shown so that backdated awards can be included.
