MINISTER PRAISES INNOVATIVE PEACE WALL PROJECT

The Peace Wall 2K Project, part of a photographic and physical exhibition of the history of the area surrounding the Peace Wall in North Belfast, was launched today by George Howarth, Minister for Social Development.

The exhibition, part of the District Partnerships Initiative and funded by the Belfast European Partnership Board, is being promoted by the Woodvale Resource Centre. It's centrepiece is an exact replica of the Peace Wall created by young people from the area who have copied, in careful detail, the many messages left by tourists and well wishers over the years.

Speaking at a reception in Transport House, High Street, Belfast, Mr Howarth said:

"Too often, young people are criticised for not acting positively in support of their community. This project is a good example of how young people can learn about the history of their area and bring that history to life for others.

"It is much to their credit that they have become involved in such an innovative project which is being supported by Peace monies."

The exhibition can be seen in Transport House, High Street, Belfast. Information is available from the Woodvale Resource Centre, telephone Belfast 9074 4600.
