UPDATE ON LURGAN WATER MAINS IMPROVEMENT SCHEME

The Water Service, part of the Department for Regional Development, has given an update on the £1.6 million water mains improvement scheme which has been under construction in Lurgan town.

Over the past year three contractors have been working in Lurgan on behalf of the Water Service. Work has included the laying of new distribution and trunk water mains together with making new consumer connections and most of this work has been completed successfully.

Replacement water mains have been laid in Church Place, Market Street, High Street, Queen Street, Flush Place, Gilford Road, Upper Toberhewney Lane, Lough Road, North Street, Lake Street, William Street, Victoria Street, Brownlow Terrace, Kilmaine Street, Clara Street, Grattan Street, Ulster Street, Church Walk, Wellington Street and Castle Lane.

Giving details of the works schedule, Water Service spokesman Mr John Close commented, "As last year, work in the main street will cease over the Christmas and New Year period to minimise inconvenience to the public and traders. The majority of road surfacing that has taken place to date is a temporary measure to allow any settlement to take place before permanent reinstatement is completed.

"Our contractors will continually monitor the temporary reinstatement to ensure it remains in a good and safe condition. Permanent reinstatement has already taken place on part of the Gilford Road and Upper Toberhewney Lane. All three contractors will be working on the permanent reinstatement of roads and footpaths from mid January 2000, with completion due in June 2000."

Mr Close concluded, "Water Service would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused, but would stress that this work is essential for the improvement of the water supply infrastructure in Lurgan. Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum and I would ask anyone with any concerns or queries to contact the Water Service WATERLINE number on 0345 440088."
