ROADS SERVICE TO INVEST £3.2 MILLION IN COLERAINE

£3.2 million is being invested in capital and maintenance schemes in the Coleraine area this year.

Speaking to Coleraine Borough Council as he delivered the Autumn Report, Uel Wilson, from Roads Service Northern Division said: "The Agherton Road widening scheme, the Killowen traffic calming scheme, the Curragh Road safety barrier scheme and the Cashel Rd/KinnyglassRd/Shinny Rd visibility improvement scheme are now all complete."

Mr Wilson said: "Other schemes which will be taken forward include the footway provision, resurfacing, and vertical realignment of Ballywillan Road, Portrush and the provision of a footway on Curragh Road at Torrens Corner.

"Also programmed for this year is improved signage and road markings at, Ballytober (Bushmills), St. Columba's (Kilrea) and Carnalridge (Portrush) Primary Schools under the Safer Routes to Schools programme," said Mr Wilson.

"Roads Service is making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and has completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements can't be done without some disruption to traffic," he said.

"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."

At the meeting he discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2007/08. He said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, road improvement schemes to be carried out include the realignment of the Agivey Road (at Landmore), safety barrier provision on the Ring Road between Portrush Road and Cromore Road and the extension to the existing footway on Boleran Road at Coolnasillagh Road."
