ROADS SERVICE TO INVEST £5.8 MILLION IN LONDONDERRY

£5.8 million is being invested in capital and maintenance schemes in the Derry City Council area this year.

Speaking to Derry City Council as he delivered the Autumn Report, Jim Beattie, from Roads Service Northern Division, said: "The Glendermott Road and Woodside Road minor works schemes are now complete, as is Stage 2 of dualling at Crescent Link which included the provision of crossing facilities at Knightsbridge and the Retail Park."

Mr Beattie said: "Other schemes which will be taken forward include the realignment of the Mullennan Road on to the Letterkenny Road and improvements to the visibility splays at the junction of Carmoney Road / Kilnappy Road.

"Also programmed for this year are the Foyle Bridge variable message signs which have now been installed and are currently undergoing site acceptance testing. Work is also ongoing to provide Safer Routes to Schools at a number of schools in the Pennyburn and Bligh's Lane areas."

"Roads Service is making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and has completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements can't be done without some disruption to traffic," he said.

"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."

At the meeting he discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2007/ 08. Mr Beattie said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, a road improvement scheme will be carried out on the Ardmore Road at the bends south of Tullyally and a widening or footbridge scheme is being assessed at Park Bridge, Park, to cater for pedestrians and cyclists. Stage 3 of Crescent Link dualling is also at design stage."
