ROADS SERVICE TO INVEST £6.2 MILLION IN ANTRIM
£6.2 million is being invested in capital and maintenance schemes in the Antrim area this year.
Speaking to Antrim Borough Council, as he delivered the Autumn/Winter Report, Graeme Brown, from Roads Service Northern Division, said: "A footway scheme on Magheralane Road, Randalstown, a visibility improvement scheme at Staffordstown Road / Creeve Road, Creggan, a traffic calming scheme in Crumlin and part-time traffic signals at Dunsilly Roundabout have now been completed. The M2 motorway on-slip roads from the Antrim Area Hospital are now underway and are expected to be completed in Spring 2007."
Mr Brown said: "Other schemes which will be taken forward include missing links of footway at Creevery Road, Antrim and Stiles Way, Antrim.
"Also programmed for this year are the introduction of a Toucan crossing on the Old Steeple Road, Antrim, new school warning signage at Loanends Primary School and new warning signage will be erected on the B52 Largy Road," said Mr Brown.
"Roads Service is making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and has completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements can't be done without some disruption to traffic," he said.
"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."
At the meeting he discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2007/ 08. He said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, road improvement schemes will be carried out on the Dublin Road / Dungonnell Road, Antrim, safety barrier at Crumlin Road, Crumlin and footway schemes on Staffordstown Road, Randalstown and Paradise Walk, Templepatrick."
