£5 MILLION INVESTED IN NEWRY AND MOURNE

Roads Service is investing over £5 million in capital and maintenance schemes in the Newry and Mourne area this year.

Speaking to Newry and Mourne District Council, as he delivered the Autumn Report, John White, Divisional Manager from Roads Service Southern Division, said: "The A1 Loughbrickland to Beech Hill scheme is now complete and was opened officially on 21 November 2006.

"A major village improvement scheme is almost finished in Cullaville. Junction improvements to the Sandbank Road/Kilkeel Road, Hilltown and a scheme to provide a new footbridge, junction realignment, street lighting and footway provision on Greenpark Road, Rostrevor have also been completed."

Mr White said: "Other schemes which will be taken forward include a junction realignment scheme at Derryleckagh Road junction with Bridge Road; and localised road widening and footpath provision between Brannock Close and Glenhill Park on the Glenn Hill, Newry.

"Roads Service is making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and has completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements can't be done without some disruption to traffic," he said.

"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."

At the meeting Mr White discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2007/08. He said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, road improvement schemes will be carried out on the Hilltown Road at Haugheys Hill, Newry; at Mountain Road, Kilkeel; on the Dundalk Road/Cullyhanna Road, Newtownhamilton; on the Concession Road at Wards Corner; and at Kittys Road, Kilkeel."
