ROADS SERVICE TO INVEST £4.2 MILLION IN BALLYMENA
Roads Service has announced that £4.2 million is being invested in capital and maintenance schemes in the Ballymena area this year.
Speaking to Ballymena Borough Council as he delivered the Autumn Report, Terry Fulton, from Roads Service Northern Division, said: "The Woodtown Road / Old Cullybackey Road, Ballymena and the Knockan Road /Eglish Road junction improvement schemes are now complete."
Mr Fulton said: "Other schemes which will be taken forward include Stage I of the extension to the footway on Dreen Road, Cullybackey between Queens Park and the village, and the commencement of the realignment of Tullygarley Road, Ballymena from the Rosses roundabout through to Dans Road.
"Also programmed for this year are the introduction of a Toucan crossing on the A26 Larne Road dual carriageway, Ballymena, traffic calming measures for Gracehill Village, gateway features for Cullybackey Village and mini-roundabouts at junctions in Broughshane and Kells," said Mr Fulton.
"Roads Service is making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and has completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements can't be done without some disruption to traffic," he said.
"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."
At the meeting he discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2007/ 08. He said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, road improvement schemes will be carried out on the Tullygarley Road, Ballymena, footway schemes on the Shellinghill Road, Cullybackey, and Glenravel Road, Martinstown and junction visibility improvements at Largy Road / Gillistown Road, Portglenone and Ballynafie Road / Carmagrim Road, Portglenone."
