ROADS SERVICE INVEST £1.5 MILLION IN LISBURN

Roads Service has announced that £1.5 million is being invested in capital and maintenance schemes in the Lisburn area this year.

In addition, £104 million is committed to the M1/Westlink improvement project, which is for work being carried out over the next three years.

Speaking to Lisburn City Council as he delivered the Autumn Report, Tom McCourt, from Roads Service Eastern Division said: "A major roads scheme planned for Dromore Road, Hillsborough has been the subject of a Public Inquiry. Following the Inquiry, Roads Service is considering the Inspector's report and will soon announce how the scheme will be taken forward.

In this year's programme of works, we have included several minor works schemes. Some are subject to successful land acquisition and these include signalisation of the junction of McKinstry Road / Wilmar Road, Lisburn, a junction improvement at Quarterland Road / Budore Road, Hannahstown and sightline improvements from Howe Road and Magheraconluce Road onto the Ballynahinch Road at Ballykeel."

"Roads Service has made every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements cannot be done without some disruption to traffic," he said.

"In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment."

Looking to the future, Mr McCourt said "The Division is continuing to identify opportunities for road safety and traffic flow enhancement through an initial raft of more than thirty route improvement studies. Three of these have recently been completed within the Lisburn Area. These include two routes from the City, namely the B101 towards the International Airport and the A49 to Ballynahinch plus the A501 from Colinglen towards Glenavy. These studies, in conjunction with others, will assist the identification of possible future improvements along the trunk and non-strategic rural routes within the Lisburn City Council area."
