ROADS SERVICE TO INVEST £4.5 MILLION IN DOWN

Roads Service has announced that £4.5 is being invested in capital and maintenance schemes in the Down District Council area this year.

Speaking to Down District Council as he delivered the Autumn Report, Kevin Monaghan, from Roads Service Southern Division said: "The A7 Belfast Road/ Finnebrogue Road, Downpatrick right turning lane and the B2 Annacloy Road, Downpatrick carriageway realignment schemes are now complete."

Mr Monaghan said: "Other schemes which will be taken forward include visability improvements to the A2 Shore Road, Strangford and the A25 DublinRoad/ Burrenreagh Road, Castlewellan.

"Also programmed for this year are junction improvements at Magheraloan Road, Annacloy; provision of footways at Drumsnade Road near the primary school and at Magheraknock Road, Ballynahinch, near Langley Road.

"Roads Service is making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and has completed as many schemes as possible during the summer months when there is generally less traffic. However, most road users appreciate that road improvements can't be done without some disruption to traffic."

Mr Monaghan added: "In the last three years some £735 million has been spent on developing and maintaining the road network across Northern Ireland - £495 million on road maintenance and £240 million on capital improvements. This represents a huge investment." At the meeting he discussed the priorities for road improvements in 2007/ 08. He said: "Subject to availability of land and funding, road improvement schemes will be carried out on the B7 Killyleagh Road/ Crossgar Road, Crossgar; on the Vianstown Road/ Bonecastle Road, Downpatrick; and footway improvements are planned for C288 Crawfordstown Road, Drumaness; Downpatrick Road, Ardglass and the Commons Road, Ballykinlar."
