SEWER REPLACEMENT WORK TO START IN SOUTH BELFAST

Work to replace a section of sewer in Ormeau Road will begin on Monday 24 July 2006.

The existing sewer is in poor condition and has partially collapsed at several locations. This work will take approximately three weeks to complete. A pipebursting technique will be used to lessen the extent of excavations required.

The section to be replaced extends for approximately 130 metres from the junction at Donegall Pass/Gasworks towards the junction with Ormeau Avenue.

This scheme is part of the £130million Belfast Sewers Project, which will ensure Belfast's sewerage system will cater for the future development needs of the city and comply with environmental standards.

Traffic management will ensure that single lane traffic flows in both directions at all times. This work has been programmed to commence immediately after the July holiday period when traffic flows tend to be less than at other times of the year.

Further details on the Belfast Sewers Project can be found on the Water Service website www.waterni.gov.uk or by contacting Waterline on 08457 440088.

NOTE TO EDITORS:

1. The Belfast Sewers Project is part funded through the Reform and Reinvestment Initiative.

2. The £130million Belfast Sewers Project will include the construction of a new 9.5km tunnel up to 4m in diameter, 19km of new sewers, new storm water retention tanks and the refurbishment of 500 sections of existing sewer.
