BELFAST HARBOUR COMMISSIONER APPOINTED
Councillor Alban Maginness of Belfast City Council has been appointed to the Board of Belfast Harbour Commissioners.
Transport Minister, David Cairns, welcomed the appointment and said:
"The appointment of Councillor Maginness, who joins Councillors Robin Newton, Tom Hartley and David Browne on the Board of Belfast Harbour Commissioners continues to allow the electorate of Belfast to have an important voice on the Board of the Harbour Commissioners."
The Minister added: "I wish to thank the outgoing member, Councillor Pat McCarthy, who has recently been elected as Lord Mayor of Belfast. Councillor McCarthy made a valuable contribution to the work of the Board and I wish him well for the future."
NOTES TO EDITORS:
1. Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC) are responsible for the improvement, maintenance and management of the Port of Belfast and for the facilities within it. Board members currently receive remuneration of £9,040 per annum.
2. Councillor Pat McCarthy left the board of BHC after having taken up the post of Lord Mayor. The present term of office for the members of the board expires on 31 December 2007.
3. Councillor Alban Maginness (SDLP) was elected to Belfast City Council to represent the Castle Electoral Area in May 1985 and currently represents the Oldpark Electoral Area. He is a former Lord Mayor and in June 1998 was elected to the Assembly for the area of North Belfast which he continues to represent. Councillor Maginness has sat on various committees and sub-committees within the Belfast City Council.
4. The process of appointing members to the Board of Belfast Harbour Commissioners is carried out in accordance with the Code of Practice of the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
