DIVERSION ON THE A26 BELFAST TO COLERAINE ROAD
A diversion on the A26 between Ballymoney and Ballymena will be removed on 8 July.
The current diversion for southbound traffic between A44 Drones Road and Knockahollet Road junctions, on the A26 Belfast to Coleraine Road, will be fully opened to traffic in both directions.
Roads Service said the removal is to accommodate the heavy traffic expected on the route during the peak holiday periods, between 8–24 July.
However, as part of the phasing of the ongoing works, it will be necessary to completely close the section of the A26 Frosses Road at Ballynaloob, for an eight week period starting late on Sunday 24 July.
Diversion routes will be clearly signed and road users are asked to allow extra time for their journey during this period.
This closure is necessary to permit the major reconstruction of a section of existing carriageway within the works.
The Ballynaloob climbing lane is part of a continuing Roads Service programme to improve overtaking opportunities on the single carriageway sections of Northern Ireland’s key corridors.
The schemes involve the widening of stretches of single carriageway road, to provide two lanes for traffic in one direction and one lane in the other direction.
The 2.1 kilometre long Ballynaloob climbing lane and junction improvements scheme start south of the Dunloy crossroads and continues northwest towards Ballymoney. They will provide improved overtaking opportunities for Ballymoney bound traffic, by making it easier and safer for traffic to overtake slow moving vehicles travelling uphill towards Ballymoney. The scheme will also provide significant junction improvements at the Dunloy cross-roads.
