ROADS SERVICE INVEST OVER £500,000 IN LARNE AREA

Capital Investment totalling £549,500 is planned for Larne this year, said Roads Service Divisional Roads Manager, Dr Andrew Murray.

Dr Murray told Larne Borough Council that this level of investment is indicative of the substantial capital investment throughout Northern Ireland, as he delivered the Roads Service Spring Report to the Council.

Larger schemes that will be taken forward include the construction of a right-turn lane on the A8 Belfast Road at the junction with Ballybracken Road, and the provision of approximately 600 metres of new footway in Glenoe village. It is also hoped to make a start on the provision of a substantial new roundabout on Antiville Road, at the junctions with Linn Road and Mill Brae.

Dr Murray welcomed the continued high level of investment in local transport and safety measures in Larne, which include:

  • collision remedial measures along Antiville Road in Larne;
  • collision remedial measures on part of the A36 Shane’s Hill Road;
  • traffic calming measures in Ballystrudder; and
  • pedestrian improvements on Linn and Glenarm Roads.

"Most road users appreciate that making this sort of improvement cannot be done without some disruption to traffic. Roads Service is, however, making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum by completing as many major schemes as possible during the summer months. There is generally less traffic during this period and contractors can take advantage of longer daylight hours and, where possible, avoid peak traffic times," said Dr Murray.

"Road Service will be making every effort to give motorists advance warning of roadworks through signage and information prior to works. There will be updated information on our website and radio traffic reports,’’ he said.

Dr Murray also took the opportunity to highlight some of the schemes completed in 2004/05.

Further work has been carried out on:

  • the National Cycle Network Route from Millbrook to Pound Street improving the route for both cyclists and pedestrians;
  • collision remedial measures were introduced on the Croft and Ballymullock Roads;
  • new footways were provided at Middle Road, Ballystrudder, and at Raloo Road, Larne near Tureagh School;
  • substantial lengths of resurfacing have also been completed on the B100 Ballyrickland Road, the B148 Ballymullock Road and the C74 Carrickfergus Road.
