ROADS SERVICE INVEST ALMOST £1 MILLION IN COLERAINE AREA
Investment totalling £974,000 is planned for Coleraine this year, said Roads Service Divisional Roads Manager, Dr Andrew Murray.
Dr Murray told Coleraine Borough Council that this level of investment is indicative of the substantial capital investment throughout Northern Ireland, as he delivered the Roads Service Spring Report to the Council.
Larger schemes that will be taken forward include:
- the realignment of the bend on the Glenkeen Road, just east of the junction with the Agivey Road;
- the widening of part of Agherton Road, Portstewart; and
- the realignment and widening of the Windyhill Road, west of Dunboe crossroads.
Dr Murray welcomed the continued high level of investment in local transport and safety measures in Coleraine, which includes:
- increasing the capacity of Strand Road Roundabout by widening the Ring Road approaches to provide three lanes at each entry and widening the circulatory carriageway;
- a traffic-calming scheme proposed at Killowen St, Kyles Brae and Shuttle Hill involving provision of pedestrian refuges, footway build-outs, junction platforms and a mini-roundabout; and
- traffic monitoring cameras being erected at Waterside and Lodge Road Roundabout to allow remote monitoring of traffic flows.
"Most road users appreciate that making this sort of improvement cannot be done without some disruption to traffic. Roads Service is, however, making every effort to keep disruption to a minimum by completing as many major schemes as possible during the summer months. There is generally less traffic during this period and contractors can take advantage of longer daylight hours and, where possible, avoid peak traffic times," said Dr Murray.
"Roads Service will be making every effort to give motorists advance warning of roadworks through signage and information prior to works. There will be updated information on our website and radio traffic reports."
Dr Murray also took the opportunity to highlight some of the schemes completed in 2004/05.
- The roundabout at the junction of Dunhill Road and Drumcroone Road has recently been completed at a cost of £300,000;
- The bends on Cashel Road between MacLeary Road and Letterloan Road have been realigned at a cost of £240,000;
- A traffic calming scheme has been introduced in Castleroe involving erection of Gateway Signs and coloured surfacing at all entries to the village; and
- There has been significant resurfacing on the Ring Road, Craigmore Road and Castleroe Road.
