MAJOR STRENGTHENING ROAD WORKS FOR A2 BELFAST TO BANGOR ROAD AT SEAHILL, HOLYWOOD

A £900,000 resurfacing scheme on the A2 Belfast to Bangor Road is due to commence on 28 May 2005.

The section of road involved is a 1.4km stretch to the east of Holywood, between Ballygrainey Road and Ballymoney Road. The work is scheduled to take three months to complete.

A Department for Regional Development spokesperson said: "Up to 40,000 vehicles each day travel along this road. Unfortunately, there will be some unavoidable disruption due to the works. However, there will be carefully programmed works operations and traffic management arrangements, in order to minimise inconvenience to the travelling public."

The scheme will be carried out in two phases. Phase one includes work between Ballygrainey Road and Seahill Road. Phase two includes work between Seahill Road and Ballymoney Road. Each phase will take approximately six weeks to complete. For safety reasons, it will be necessary to close the road to Belfast bound traffic for two consecutive Sundays towards the end of August, in order to complete the final surfacing operations.

During almost all of the works, it will be necessary to operate tidal flow traffic management measures. From Monday to Friday, two lanes will be operational during the morning peak traffic flow (07:30 to 09:30) Belfast bound with one lane operational Bangor bound. In the evening peak time, (16:30 to 18:30) two lanes will be operational Bangor bound and one lane operational Belfast bound. At all other times, including weekends, a minimum of one lane in each direction will be maintained.

Alternative route signing will be in place to assist the travelling public.
