ROAD IMPROVEMENT SCHEME AT BALLYNAFIE ROAD /LARGY ROAD, PORTGLENONE
Dr Andrew Murray, Divisional Roads Manager for Roads Service’s Northern Division, today announced that contractors, Maxwells, will carry out a road improvement scheme at the A42 Ballynafie Road/ B62 Largy Road junction between Ballymena and Portglenone. The scheme, which is due to start shortly, is estimated to cost approximately £100,000.
Dr Murray said: "The main purpose of the scheme is to improve safety for all road users of this busy junction. The scheme is one of a number of improvements we are looking at on this route for completion during the next few years.
"Construction work will last for approximately six weeks, during which time both roads will be open to traffic. Unfortunately, some disruption to traffic will be unavoidable but every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum.
"The scheme was included in Roads Service’s November 2004 Report to Ballymena Borough Council, and there is strong support for the proposal."
Dr Murray added: "Unfortunately, the nature of the scheme will mean the unavoidable loss of a number of mature trees along the road boundary but, following discussions with Forest Service, this will be kept to a minimum."
NOTES TO EDITORS:
