MAJOR ROAD SCHEMES ON A5 AND A4

Work commenced this week on a £400,000 scheme to provide a further climbing lane on the A5 road between Ballygawley and Omagh.

The work, which will take 16 weeks to complete, will be carried out at Blackhill, near Kelly’s of Garvaghey.

Road’s Minister, John Spellar, MP, welcomed the commencement of the scheme saying: "The 1.2 kilometre scheme involves alterations to the existing road to include an overtaking lane in the eastbound direction."

The contract has been awarded to F.P. McCann Magherafelt.

The Minister also welcomed the news that work is to commence next week on a similar scheme on the A4 Belfast Road at Maguiresbridge.

The Minister said "The £990,000 scheme involves alterations to include a 1.8 kilometre overtaking lane in the westbound direction. Both schemes will provide motorists with an opportunity to overtake slower moving vehicles, thus helping to relieve congestion, ease driver frustration and increase road safety."

Drivers are asked to adhere to the temporary 40mph speed limits and the no overtaking restrictions put in place for the duration of the works.

Work at Maguiresbridge begins on 14 February 2005. The contract is due to take 18 weeks to complete and has been awarded to P.T. McWilliams from Seskinore.
