FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS ON THE NORTHERN TRANSPORT CORRIDOR

John Spellar, Minister for the Department for Regional Development, today announced that contractor, RJ Maxwell & Sons Ltd, Bushmills Road, Coleraine, has been appointed for the construction of a roundabout on the A37 Dunhill Road/A29 Drumcroone Road junction on the Londonderry side of Coleraine. The scheme, which is due to start on 5 January 2005, is estimated to cost £250,000.

The Minister said: "The main purpose of the scheme is to reduce delays for traffic as a result of improving the capacity of this junction on the Northern Key Transport Corridor.

"The scheme will also improve safety for all road users using this busy junction of two trunk roads and is one of a number of improvements planned for the Coleraine to Londonderry route over the next few years."

Construction work will last for approximately 15 weeks, during which time both roads will be open to two-way traffic. Unfortunately some disruption to traffic will be unavoidable, however every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

1. There is strong support within Coleraine Borough Council for the scheme.

2. The scheme will result in the removal of some existing hedging but replacement planting will take place.
