FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS ON THE NORTHERN TRANSPORT CORRIDOR

Minister of State, John Spellar, MP, today announced the construction of a £500,000 roundabout on the Ballymoney bypass at the A26, Frosses Road/B16 Kilroughts Road junction.

DRD Roads Service has awarded the contract to Kennedy Quarries Ltd of Macosquin, and work will begin on 17 January 2005.

The Minister said: "The construction of this roundabout on the Northern Key Transport Corridor, will improve the capacity of the junction and reduce traffic delays for motorists. It will also improve safety for all travellers using this busy junction.

"This scheme forms part of a number of planned improvements for the Coleraine to Ballymena route, over the next few years."

Construction work will last for approximately 20 weeks, during which time both roads will be open to two-way traffic. Unfortunately, some disruption to traffic will be unavoidable, however Roads Service has made every effort to keep this to a minimum.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

  1. There is strong support within Ballymoney Borough Council for the scheme.
  2. The scheme will result in the removal of some existing trees, but replacement planting of appropriate local species of trees will take place.
