WATER SERVICE INVESTS £6 MILLION IN MOYLE COUNCIL AREA

DRD Water Service today announced plans to start projects worth £6 million, in the Moyle area, over the next two years.

John Spellar, MP, Minister with responsibility for the Department for Regional Development, said: "Investment of £3 billion over the next 20 years is required to protect public health, meet European standards on water quality, respond to increasing demand, and upgrade infrastructure.

"This investment programme is already underway and the Government has allocated around £590 million to invest in water and sewerage services up to 2006, throughout Northern Ireland. The introduction of water charges will ensure the necessary sustained investment can be achieved, throughout Northern Ireland."

William Duddy, Director of Customer Services for Water Service, presented the details of the capital works programme to Moyle District Council.

Mr Duddy said: "Local projects, for which feasibility studies are currently being undertaken, include improvements to wastewater treatment works at Moss-Side, Ballycastle, Bushmills and Ballintoy. Drainage area studies of Ballycastle and Bushmills will lead to a planned programme of sewer network improvements and watermain zonal studies will also lead to major watermain improvements that will strengthen the network in the area."
