WATER SERVICE INVESTS £16.3 MILLION IN STRABANE COUNCIL AREA

DRD Water Service today announced plans to start projects worth £13.5 million, in the Strabane area, over the next two years. This is in addition to the £2.8 million completed this year or under construction.

Alec McQuillan, Water Service Wastewater Services manager, presented the details of the capital works programme to Strabane District Council.

John Spellar, MP, Minister with responsibility for Regional Development, said: "Investment of £3 billion over the next 20 years is required to protect public health, meet European standards on water quality, respond to increasing demand, and upgrade infrastructure.

"This investment programme is already underway and the Government has allocated around £590 million to invest in water and sewerage services up to 2006, throughout Northern Ireland."

Mr McQuillan said: "Local wastewater treatment works projects are underway at Castlederg/Killen and projects at various stages of development are planned for Clady, Milltown, Burndennet, Cullion and Sion Mills. In addition to ongoing sewer replacements and extensions, Drainage Area Studies will lead to further improvements to the sewer networks in the area. Watermain zonal studies will also lead to major watermain improvements that will strengthen the network in the area."
