WATER SERVICE INVESTS £16.6 MILLION IN BALLYMONEY COUNCIL AREA
DRD Water Service today announced plans to start projects worth £13.6 million, in the Ballymoney area, over the next two years. This is in addition to the £3 million completed this year or under construction.
William Duddy, Director of Customer Services for Water Service, presented the details of the capital works programme to Ballymoney Borough Council.
John Spellar, MP, Minister with responsibility for the Department for Regional Development, said: "Investment of £3 billion over the next 20 years is required to protect public health, meet European standards on water quality, respond to increasing demand, and upgrade infrastructure.
"This investment programme is already underway and the Government has allocated around £590 million to invest in water and sewerage services up to 2006, throughout Northern Ireland."
Mr Duddy said: "Local projects include improvements to the sewers in Ballymoney town, Drumcon sewerage scheme and the upgrading of Dunloy wastewater treatment works. Upgrading of the wastewater treatment works at Glenstall is at the design stage and feasibility studies are currently being undertaken on improvements to wastewater treatment at Rasharkin, Dervock, Stranocum, Loughguile, Cloughmills and Ballybogey. In addition, Drainage Area Studies will lead to a planned programme of sewer network improvements throughout the Borough."
Watermain zonal studies will also lead to major watermain improvements that will strengthen the network in the area.
