TRAFFIC & PARKING INFORMATION FOR LONDONDERRY

DRD Roads Service is implementing a number of measures to ease traffic congestion and parking problems for shoppers in Londonderry city centre, in the run up to Christmas.

Whilst Roads Service appreciates that for many people a car may be essential, it is worthwhile considering convenient public transport alternatives, rather than contributing to the seasonal congestion.

Park and Ride

City shoppers will benefit from a free Park and Ride service, which will operate from the Fort George site on Strand Road. The scheme will operate on Saturdays and Sundays, until 19 December and daily, until the

24 December, between 12:00 pm and 6:00 pm. Buses will depart every 15 minutes with stops on Strand Road, the Diamond and Orchard Street.

City Centre Parking

There are over 3,000 off-street parking spaces in the city centre and a further 1200 spaces are available on-street. In addition, the car park at Derry City Council Offices, on Strand Road, which contains 110 spaces, will be available on the Saturdays and Sundays, during the month of December. Details of all car parks are contained in the map, which can be viewed online at www.lovethechange.co.uk

Updates on availability of spaces

Local radio station, Q102, will broadcast regular city centre car parking and traffic information updates, throughout December. This broadcast will provide current information on the availability of spaces within the multi-storey car parks and the Roads Service car parks, allowing motorists to plan their route accordingly.

Traffic Management

Roads Service requests motorists to follow the direction signage for the car parks and observe the information on the variable message signs, which indicate whether there are spaces available in the multi-storey car parks. If there are no spaces available, motorists should not queue at the car parks entrances but proceed to the next adjacent car park.

Motorists may not be able to park in their preferred car park but there is always parking availability in one of the peripheral car parks, all of which are a short walking distance from the city centre.

To ensure traffic flows as freely as possible, Roads Service would encourage motorists to adhere to the existing on-street waiting restrictions and to co-operate with the traffic wardens, who will be operating at key locations in the city in the run-up to Christmas.

Additional information is available on Roads Service car parks at: www.roadsni.gov.uk, under Car Parking.
