ALMOST £1.7 MILLION INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT IN THE LIMAVADY AREA

Almost £1.7million is being spent on structural road maintenance in the Limavady area this year, Principal Engineer, Mr Uel Wilson, revealed, when he presented DRD Roads Service’s autumn report to the local District Council.

Introducing the report, Mr Wilson said: "The level of investment in the Limavady Council area is indicative of the continued high levels of investment across Northern Ireland that, once again, sees Roads Service committing some £70 million towards structural maintenance. It is worth noting that the vast majority of this money, some 90% in fact, is being earmarked for work on non-trunk roads, which form the bulk of the road network in this area.

"In the Limavady Council area, Roads Service has earmarked almost £1.7 million for resurfacing works. Recently completed schemes include, 650m of asphalt resurfacing on the A2, Ballykelly Road, at Ballyspallen and 700m of the Roemill Road, at Coolessan. Other significant resurfacing schemes have been completed at the Seacoast Road, Crindle and at Birren Road, Tamniarin."

Mr Wilson also referred to the ongoing construction of the £1 million improvement scheme, which was recently announced by Minister of State, John Spellar, MP, on the A6, Glenshane Road at Munreery, east of Claudy.

The Minister said: "The 1.5km climbing lane, which starts at the Ballyhanedin Road junction and continues eastwards towards Dungiven, will improve overtaking opportunities for Dungiven bound traffic."

Mr Wilson continued: "It is also worth pointing out that Roads Service has secured significantly enhanced funding for local transport and safety measures and this means that, in the Limavady Council area, spending on this particular aspect of our work, which includes work on traffic calming, collision remedial and minor works, has increased this year.

"The increase in funding has facilitated the delivery of schemes such as the 220m extension to the footway at Benone Avenue, between the caravan parks, and provision of a footway on Seacoast Road, Magilligan, between Benone Corner and the Anglers Rest pub.

"A £250,000 traffic calming scheme is also under way in Greysteel and will include measures such as provision of footways, pedestrian refuges, hatched areas, red surfacing and gateway treatment at each end of the village."
