NEW £10M WATER TREATMENT WORKS FOR SOUTH ARMAGH
DRD Water Service is continuing its programme of investment with the construction of a new £10m water treatment works at Carran Hill in South Armagh.
The new Carran Hill Water Treatment Works will ensure compliance with demanding European Union drinking water quality standards. It will treat over 8 million litres of water per day and will supply high quality drinking water to 16,000 people in the South Armagh area.
Speaking about this latest project and the wider investment being made by Water Service, Trevor Haslett, Director of Development said: "This scheme forms an integral part of Water Service’s Resource Strategy. It is a further important step towards providing Northern Ireland with a high quality water supply. The upgrading of this Works is part of an overall £90 million programme over the three-year period to 2006. In addition, over the same period, £150 million will be invested to accelerate watermain refurbishment across Northern Ireland.
"Water Service plans to invest around £600 million to upgrade 300 water and sewerage infrastructure projects across Northern Ireland over the next three years. This investment programme is a visible sign of Water Service’s commitment to improve compliance with environmental and drinking water quality standards, protect the environment and deliver a better service for customers."
Constructing the new works will be Earth Tech Farrans, the joint venture contractors responsible for the ‘design and build’ of a number of treatment works throughout the province, including the £20m Drumaroad works just outside Castlewellan and the highly innovative underground Fofanny works currently being constructed in the Mournes.
Construction work is starting on the new facility at Carran Hill in November with completion due around the end of 2006.
NOTE TO EDITORS:
The new works will be located adjacent to the existing works.
