CROSS BORDER ROAD SCHEME COMPLETED AT RABBIT ISLAND

Minister of State, John Spellar, MP, today announced the completion of the £700,000 road works, on the County Fermanagh portion of the A3/N54, in the vicinity of Rabbit Island.

The works form part of a joint strategy, by Roads Service and Monaghan County Council, to improve the A3/N54, between Monaghan and Cavan. Announcing the completion of the works, the Minister said: "Roads Service is working in partnership with Monaghan County Council, to improve this cross border route. Funding has been secured, not only to complete the recent works, but also to replace the Clonfad Bridge, where work is due to start shortly.

"I would like to compliment the patience and understanding of those using the A3/N54 road, who unfortunately have had to endure road closures and diversions, which were necessary to facilitate the works on this important route. I want to thank the funding body’s managing authority, the Special EU Programmes Body, for facilitating this cooperation between the project partners."

The road realignment and widening scheme has been part funded by a 75% grant, available under the INTERREG IIIA Community Initiative, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, Monaghan Office.

The recent works were completed by James Balfour & Sons, Killadeas, with earthworks sub contractor, Mills Contracts, Dromore.
