ROAD IMPROVEMENTS START AT BRIDGE STREET, KILKEEL
DRD Roads Service will start a resurfacing scheme on the A2, Bridge Street, Kilkeel on Monday, 1 November. The £35,000 scheme will involve the asphalt resurfacing of 140 metres of Bridge Street, along with the Newry Street and Greencastle Street approaches to the Bridge Street/Newry Street/Greencastle Street junction in Kilkeel town centre.
A Roads Service spokesperson said: "The scheme will strengthen this road improving the skidding resistance and running surface for the safety and comfort of road users. This stretch of road has been the subject of continuous patching repairs and this resurfacing scheme will eliminate the need for such repair work and help improve the visual appearance of Kilkeel town centre."
Work will commence on Monday 1 November, with the lifting and alteration to kerbs. While this work is being carried out, it will be necessary to close lanes to traffic and delays can be expected.
For the safety of road users and contracting staff, it will be necessary to close Bridge Street while the resurfacing is being carried out. To minimise disruption, the road will be closed from 6.00 pm on Saturday to 6.00 am on Monday morning for two consecutive weekends, commencing Saturday 6 November.
While Bridge Street is closed, traffic can use an alternative route via Rooney Road, Harbour Road, Mourne Esplanade, Greencastle Street and Scrogg Road or alternatively Drumcro Road, Moyad Road and Mill Road.
DRD Roads Service apologises for any inconvenience caused to road users and would ask motorists to make an allowance for traffic delays in this area during the works.
