BUILDING CAREERS IN CONSTRUCTION WEEK

As part of National Construction Week, DRD Roads Service will be showing secondary education pupils, from schools in the Banbridge and Loughbrickland area, the construction industry, at first hand, on the site of their Lougbrickland to Beech Hill dual carriageway scheme, on Wednesday 13 October.

Roads Service has an important role to play in demonstrating to young people that a career in the construction industry can tap into their energy, enthusiasm and potential.

National Construction Week is an industry wide campaign that aims to highlight the important contribution that the construction industry makes to the community. It also gives young people the chance to experience the wide range of exciting and challenging opportunities available in the modern construction industry.

Roads Service, in conjunction with their contractor on the A1 Loughbrickland scheme, Whitemountain Civils, will give a presentation to 15 students from Saint Patrick’s School, Banbridge, Banbridge High School and Newbridge Integrated College, Loughbrickland. This presentation will give an insight into how the actual scheme came about and detail the construction process so far. It will also discuss how others will learn from the work being carried out on the site.

There will follow a site visit, where the students will witness, at first hand, the daily workings of a live construction site, including construction process and health and safety.

This is an ideal opportunity for young people to get a real taste of what the construction industry can offer. The visit to the Loughbrickland site will give the pupils a true sense of history in the making.

The future success of the industry will depend, to a large degree, on its ability to attract and retain talented people of all ages, and particularly young people. National Construction Week is co-ordinated by the Construction Industry Training Board and involves some of the leading construction companies in Northern Ireland.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

  1. National Construction Week runs from 6 - 13 October 2004.
  2. This is the sixth year that this event has taken place in Northern Ireland, and throughout the week there were over 25 events planned across the Province.
  3. Roads Service’s dualling A1 scheme, between Loughbrickland and Beech Hill, unearthed a significant archaeological find, earlier this year, providing important evidence that this was a settlement site for thousands of years and a Bronze Age burial ground, (press release issued on 31 August 2004).
