LARNE WASTEWATER TREATMENT INFORMATION DAYS
Two Information Days are taking place next week at the Larne Leisure Centre (on 28 and 29 September, between 4.00 and 8.00 pm) to provide information and advice relating to the ongoing work on the construction of the new Larne wastewater treatment works.
Representatives from DRD Water Service, their consultants and contractor will be available to answer any questions from local residents arising from the work being undertaken. Alternatively, enquiries may be made to the Water Service Customer Services Unit 24 hour telephone hotline: 08457 440088.
The works is being constructed for Water Service by the Purac Brand Consortium (a consortium of process contractor Purac Ltd and civil contractor Charles Brand Ltd). The project is being managed for Water Service by Atkins Consultants Ltd.
A Water Service spokesperson said: "Whilst every effort will be made to minimise inconvenience during the course of the contract, the construction of pipelines is likely to cause traffic disruption.
"Roads directly affected are parts of Curran Road, Bay Road, Bay Park, Portland Street, Chelmsford Place and a short length of Chaine Memorial Road, near the harbour. Residents of these roads are being kept abreast of the necessary traffic restrictions. These will mostly allow alternate single lane traffic but there will have to be some complete closures.
"Access for emergency vehicles and for disabled will be maintained at all times. In order to avoid further public inconvenience in a few years time, the opportunity will be taken to replace the older sewers and water mains in this contract and to re-surface the roads, rather than just simply patch over the trench. Roads will be re-opened after the new pipelines and connections have been installed, with final re-surfacing undertaken later in the contract," the spokesperson added.
The new £12.5 million wastewater treatment works now being constructed in Redlands Lagoon next to the public waste re-cycling site will serve Larne and the surrounding villages of Ballygally, Drains Bay, Millbrook and Glynn.
The works will treat wastewaters to satisfy the EU standards for the foreseeable future and be disinfected to safeguard shoreline waters. The contract is to be completed in early in 2006. The treatment works will adopt modern compact treatment processes and be fully housed and odour controlled to protect the local environment. Additional sewerage works will be provided in the area between the treatment works and the new outfall near the Princess Victoria Memorial to separate foul and storm waters.
