WATER SERVICE INVESTING £2.7M IN CARRICKFERGUS BOROUGH COUNCIL AREA
Water and sewerage improvements amounting to £2.7 million are being implemented in the next three years under the Capital Works Programme which was presented to Carrickfergus Borough Council by Water Service, Eastern Division, Acting Divisional Water Manager, Mr Robb Fletcher.
Mr Fletcher said: "Water Service is embarking on a major £505 million programme of Water and Sewerage Infrastructure projects over the next three years throughout Northern Ireland. However sustained investment of £3 billion over the next 20 years is required to protect public health, meet European Standards on water quality, respond to increasing demand and upgrade infrastructure."
Mr Fletcher referred to the recently completed significant investment by Water Service in the £12m Dorisland Water Treatment Works, which has improved drinking water quality within the Borough.
"Future major projects for the Borough including the upgrading of wastewater treatment works and their sewer catchments, are being addressed through an overall strategy, the Belfast Lough North Shore Sewerage Strategy. This study will identify and co-ordinate the projects to ensure compliance with European Directives."
Referring to recent flooding problems Mr Fletcher confirmed that flood alleviation projects totalling some £500,000 had been now completed and further work amounting to £175,000 was being implemented.
Further enhancements to watermains and water quality will also be identified under Water Service’s Zonal Studies.
