WESTERN ROAD SCHEMES TO BEGIN EARLY IN NEW YEAR
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Angela Smith MP, today announced that work on two major resurfacing schemes on the A5 at Beltany between Newtownstewart and Omagh and on the A32 at Lisdoo between Dromore and Irvinestown will begin early in the New Year.
With a combined cost of £725,000, the Minister said the investment underlined the commitment of the Department for Regional Development’s Roads Service to improve roads west of the Bann.
She said: "The Assembly’s unanimous approval in principle of the Regional Transportion Strategy and the introduction of the Reinvestment and Reform Initiative (RRI) means that for the first time, Roads Service is approaching a position where it will be properly funded to carry out vital maintenance work.
"Work on both schemes will get underway on 13 January and will improve road safety at the locations as well as contribute to the ongoing drive to address the maintenance backlog."
The Beltany scheme involves widening and resurfacing 1 km of carriageway and the 12 week contract has been awarded to T D McKane from Castlederg.
The Lisdoo scheme involves widening and resurfacing 950m of carriageway and removing a crest to improve forward visibility for road users. This contract has been awarded to Milligan Brothers, Ederney and is expected to last some 20 weeks.
