WEEKEND TRAFFIC DISRUPTION EXPECTED IN SOUTH BELFAST

Work on a major Waterman Replacement Scheme in south Belfast will move onto the Malone Road this weekend.

Motorists can expect delays at the junction of the Stranmillis Road and Malone Road from 6.30 pm on Friday, 12 April. The numbers of lanes will be reduced on all three approaches to the junction.

A spokesperson for DRD Water Service said: "This work is necessary to allow a connection into an existing watermain on the Malone Road.

"From 9.30 am on Monday, 15 April 2002, work will be confined to the Malone Road for several weeks. During the morning rush hour, two city-bound and one country-bound lane will be open to traffic, switching to two country-bound and one city bound lane for the evening rush hour.

"Water Service’s aim is to minimize disruption and would like to apologize for any inconvenience to motorists. Road closures are not anticipated throughout the course of this scheme and weekend work will only be required on a limited number of occasions to carry out necessary connections."

The total cost of this six-month scheme is £600,000 and involves the laying of a watermain along a 4.5 kilometre route from the Stranmillis Road to the Andersonstown Road. This essential work will replace the existing old steel watermain, which is now in poor condition. A new high performance 450 mm plastic watermain will be inserted into the old watermain and will maintain water quality and reduce leakage.

The route of the watermain is along Stranmillis Road, Malone Road, Balmoral Avenue and Stockman’s Lane, before moving under the motorway and then onto the Andersonstown Road.
