WATERMAIN REPLACEMENT SCHEME IN SOUTH BELFAST
DRD Water Service has just started work on a £600,000 watermain replacement scheme in south Belfast.
Motorists are being advised to expect some disruption throughout the duration of the six-month scheme that involves the laying of a watermain along a 4.5 kilometre route from the Stranmillis Road to the Andersonstown Road.
A spokesperson for Water Service said: "This is essential work to replace the existing old steel watermain which is now in poor condition. A new high performance 450mm plastic watermain will be pulled up inside the old watermain and will maintain water quality and reduce leakage."
Work has already started on the Stranmillis Road and should continue for at least six weeks. Two lanes of traffic are still operational throughout the peak rush hour periods but this is reduced to one lane between 9.30am and 4.30pm.
The spokesperson said: "Water Service will try to keep any disruption to a minimum and would like to apologise for any inconvenience to motorists. We do not expect to have any road closures throughout the course of this scheme and there will only be a limited amount of weekend work which will be necessary to carry out connections."
The route of the watermain is along Stranmillis Road, Malone Road, Balmoral Avenue and Stockman’s Lane, before moving under the motorway and then onto the Andersonstown Road.
