NEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS FOR DUNGANNON

DRD Roads Service last week started work on a scheme to install new traffic signals in Dungannon.

The signals will be installed at the Scotch Street/John Street/ Railway Road junction and are designed to improve road safety, assist traffic flow and cater for pedestrian movements at this busy junction.

A spokesperson for Roads Service said: "As part of the works, sections of John Street and Railway Road will become one-way traffic in order to simplify the number of turning movements available at the junction."

Coinciding with this proposal, Jermon Developments, in partnership with Roads Service, are planning to place signals on the adjoining William Street/ Railway Road/ John Street junction. This is an integral part of Jermon Developments plans to redevelop the old cattle market and adjoining sites.

The spokesperson said: " In recent months we have been working closely with Jermon Developments, co-ordinating scheme design and planning ahead so as to ensure work progresses as smoothly as possible on the ground. On completion of the works both sets of signals will be linked together to ensure traffic flows run as efficiently as possible."

Roads Service is also carrying out some minor alterations to the road layout at the bottom of Market Square in the town.

The spokesperson said: "This will prevent traffic from continually circulating the square which has been highlighted in recent traffic studies as having an adverse effect on traffic flows in the town centre. Once these minor alterations are completed, a right turn at the bottom of the square will no longer be available to motorists.

"Roads Service will also take the opportunity to enhance pedestrian provisions in the area with new dropped kerbs and tactile pavings."

It is hoped that all works will be completed by the end of March.
