CHRISTMAS EMBARGO ON ROAD WORKS IN LONDONDERRY
The Department for Regional Development’s Roads Service has announced an embargo on planned road works on main roads into Londonderry, during the month of December.
All planned road works on the main roads and approach roads into the city will be suspended to minimise traffic disruption in the run up to Christmas. Roads Service is also providing more than 100 additional car parking spaces for weekend shoppers throughout December.
Regional Development Minister, Peter Robinson, MP, MLA, said: "Last weekend the ongoing refurbishment scheme on the Craigavon Bridge was suspended for the month of December to allow traffic to move freely in the vicinity of the bridge.
"There are also over 3000 permanent off-street car parking spaces available in the City Centre. An additional temporary car park, containing 110 spaces, has also been made available by Roads Service at the Derry City Council Offices on Saturdays and Sundays during the month of December. In addition to the off street car parks there are a further 1200 on-street spaces available."
Roads Service is asking motorists to follow the direction signage for the car parks and observe the information on the variable message signs, which indicate whether there are spaces available in the multi-storey car parks. If there are no spaces available motorists should not queue at the car parks entrances but proceed to the next adjacent car park. Motorists may not be able to park in their preferred car park but there is always parking availability in one of the peripheral car parks, all of which are a short walking distance from the City Centre.
Local radio station, Q102, will give regular updates on City Centre car parking and traffic information every hour, from 11am on Saturdays and Sundays through December and also every day from 14 December onward. This broadcast will provide current information of the availability of spaces within the multi-storey car parks, the Roads Service car parks and allow motorists to plan their route accordingly.
To ensure traffic flows as freely as possible, Roads Service would encourage motorists to adhere to the existing on-street Waiting Restrictions and to co-operate with the Traffic Wardens who will be operating at key locations in the City on the run-up to Christmas.
Details of all the car parks are contained in the recently published Visitmap, which will be distributed widely over the next week.
