SLIGHT INCREASE IN NEW CARS REGISTERED BETWEEN JANUARY AND MARCH

The number of new cars registered in Northern Ireland during the period
1 January to 31 March 2001, was 21,242, an increase of less than one percent compared to the same period last year.

The figure is contained in the latest edition of the Northern Ireland Road and Rail Transport Statistics Quarterly Bulletin which was published today.

Produced by the Central Statistics and Research Branch of the Department for Regional Development, the publication contains information on new vehicle and car registrations, light goods and heavy goods registrations, vehicle and driving tests, use of public transport and deliveries of petroleum for use in Northern Ireland.

Some of the other key points included in the Bulletin include:

  • Almost 20% (4,169) of all new cars registered for the first time were imported from the Republic of Ireland, compared to 23% for the corresponding period last year.
  • Ford was the most popular make of new car accounting for 13% of all new cars registered during the quarter.
  • Almost two-thirds (696) of the 1,060 heavy goods vehicles registered for the first time during the quarter were previously used vehicles.
  • There were 17.6 million public bus passenger journeys made during the quarter, a 6% decrease on the journeys made during the same quarter of last year.
  • During the quarter Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) passenger miles decreased by 14% to 31.58 million compared to 36.71 million for the corresponding quarter of 1999-00.
  • There were 7,790 car ‘Learner’ driving tests conducted during the quarter, a 6% increase compared to the same period in 1999-00.
  • Compared to the corresponding quarter in 1999-00 the four quarter rolling average pass rate for ‘L’ driving tests for males dropped from 61% to 57% and for females dropped from 52% to 49%.
  • 125,736* tonnes of petroleum were delivered during the quarter, an increase of 14.5% on the tonnage delivered during the corresponding quarter of 1999-00.
