NORTHERN IRELAND BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICE AGENCY RE-APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED

The re-appointment of two non-executive members of the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service Agency (NIBTSA) has been announced.

The appointments of Dr Samuel Morrell Lyons OBE BSc MD FRCA FFARCSI and Mr Basil James Titterington FCA have been made by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety. Each will run for a term of four years, from 1 December 2005.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

  1. The NIBTSA was established in 1994 and provides a safe and effective supply of blood and blood products and related services to hospitals and clinical units. The board of the Agency consists of a non-executive Chair, two non-executive members and the Chief Executive.
  2. A non-executive member of the Agency receives an annual remuneration of £1,581.
  3. The Minister responsible for Health, Social Services and Public Safety approves appointments to Health and Personal Social Services (HPSS) bodies. There are no specific qualifications for appointment. Each person is appointed to act in a personal capacity and not to represent any particular interest or group.
  4. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan Recommendations, there is a requirement for the political activity of appointees (if any declared) to be published. Both of the appointees declared that they had not engaged in any political activity in the last five years.
  5. Re-appointments:

    Dr Samuel Morrell Lyons OBE BSc MD FRCA FFARCSI lives in Belfast. He was a consultant anaesthetist in the Cardiac Surgical Unit at the Royal Group of Hospitals and Dental Hospital Health and Social Services (HSS) Trust for 32 years until retirement in 2000. He was President of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and of the Faculty of Anaesthetics of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Association's Journal "Anaesthesia". He was appointed to the board of the Agency from 1 December 2001, for a four year period. He holds no other public appointments and has not engaged in any political activity in the last five years.

    Mr Basil James Titterington FCA lives in Killyleagh. He has been Chairman of Fired Earth Interiors (Belfast) since 1995 and was Financial Director of JP Corry Holdings from 1975-2000. Some years ago, he was a member of the Review Committee for the Northern Ireland Council for Social Services, which later became Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA). He was appointed to the board of the Agency from 1 December 2001, for a four year period. He holds no other public appointments and has not engaged in any political activity in the last five years.
